Dr. Leslie Young, Jr., age 84, passed away April 14, 2017 at Grace of Leawood in Leawood, KS. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Apr. 20, from 7:00-8:30pm at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe, KS, followed by funeral services on Friday, Apr. 21 at 3:00pm at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS. Memorials are suggested to the National Parkinson Foundation at www.parkinson.org.


Leslie was born July 15, 1932 in Sioux City, Iowa to Leslie and Edythe Young. He graduated from Albert City High School in 1950, and went on to graduate from North Park College in Chicago, IL in 1954. In 1957, Leslie graduated from the University of Iowa Dental School in Iowa City, IA and served two years in the U.S. Air Force working with the Dental Corps in Alaska.

On June 20, 1959, he was united in marriage to Susan Summerfield in Albert City, Iowa. Leslie then served his country in the U.S. Army Dental Corps from 1959 and retired as Colonel in 1979. He went on to teach graduate prosthodontics at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry from 1979-2005, retiring as Professor Emeritus. Leslie was a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society, the American Legion, and the Military Order of the World Wars.

Surviving family include his wife, Susan, his daughter Dr. Kathleen Haberny, Sanford Michael Young (Maria), Charles Young (Dorothy), and Cynthia Scott (Dr. Mark), grandchildren Dr. Sandra Haberny (Michael Strube), Elliott Haberny (Deborah), Melissa Cobb (Chester), Sean Young, Miranda Speak, Gwenyth Young, and Madeline Scott, and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Edythe Young of Albert City, IA, and his grandson, Colin Scott.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Grace of Leawood Assisted Living and Great Lakes Hospice for their loving care and support over the last 7 years.
