George Owen Hurst, 94, of Lenexa, passed away on October 8, 2017. He was born on December 5, 1922 to Benjamin and Anna (Cowan) Hurst in Kansas City, MO.

George grew up in the west side of Kansas City, MO with ten brothers and sisters. He joined the Army in January of 1943 and served as a medic before getting wounded in France in 1944. He received a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and British Bravery Commendation Medal. On October 2, 1943, George married Betty Lee Fain. One of his proudest accomplishments was his GED, since he had to quit school in the sixth grade to help support his family. He went on to work at the US Post Office for 41 years before retiring. George enjoyed a lovely retirement taking vacation trips with his family.

George is survived by his loving wife, Betty; children, Suzie (John) Stutzer, Michael (Lori) Hurst; grandchildren, Abigail Jeanette (Paul) Stutzer, Michael Owen Hurst Jr., Autumn Colby Hurst; and two sisters, Pat DeVeualt Lewis of Garnett, KS and Bea Stroth of Kansas City, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Forest Hurst, Ralph Hurst, Burt Hurst, Joe Hurst, Roy Hurst, Emma Latin, and Olive Elliot.

The family will receive guests for a visitation from 11:00-12:00pm on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe. The funeral service will follow at 12:00pm. Burial will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Ascend Hospice, 783 N.E. Anderson Lane, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064.
