1929 - 2018

Patsy L. Huggins, 89, of Olathe, KS passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018. Visitation will be at 4:30PM on Wednesday, July 18 at First Baptist Church of Olathe, followed by a memorial service at 6PM. Interment will take place on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 9:00 AM at the Olathe Cemetery.

Patsy was born January 11, 1929 in Kansas City, MO to Robert Lee Williams and Sarah Rice. While still a young girl, she moved to Olathe, KS with her father and step-mother, Edna Phyllis Williams (Spacek), along with her step-brother, Edward Rice. Patsy attended Olathe High School, where she made lifelong friends and blessed the community through her love of song as a thespian performer.

After high school, she met and fell in love with Roy Dale Huggins at a wedding of mutual friends. They were married in 1948, and settled in Olathe, KS, to start their family. Patsy and Roy had four loving (and mischievous) sons. They lost their eldest son, William (Willie), to polio at the age of 3. Patsy had a beauty shop in her basement for over two decades, styling hair for, entertaining and spreading joy to each customer. She also worked at Sears and later for the Olathe School District in the Central Kitchen.

Patsy had a great gift for mixing consistent hard work with laughter, enjoyment and living each moment to the fullest, bringing joy and kindness everywhere she went. As an adult, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Olathe, where Roy was a lifelong member. She was immersed and active in many aspects of the church, including cooking for the homeless, cooking and serving Wednesday night dinner, helping with the bazaar, and as an ever-present member of the Women’s Circle. Patsy also visited residents of nursing homes and tirelessly pursued other activities supporting those in need, following her servant’s heart. She loved crafts, art, sketching, painting and the bright things of the world. Faith in God and His promises lit her path daily, and she walked it with strength and humility. Patsy loved being with her family, tending to her garden with Roy by her side, walking the stores for exercise, and feeding all manner of creatures –human or otherwise – that stopped by to receive a smile and the most recent products of her oven. She was always a willing participant in garage sale shopping, trip-taking, announced or unannounced drop-ins, and spontaneous merriment.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Roy, eldest son, William (Willie) Huggins, her father Robert L. Williams, her mother Sarah Rice, her step-mother Edna Phyllis Williams, her step-brother Edward Rice, her half-sisters Betty Jean Kilgore (Alexander) and Dalene Marie Burger (Alexander), her half-brothers Richard Calvin Alexander and Sidney Dale Alexander, Jr., and her granddaughter and namesake Patsy Melissa Petzold (Huggins).

She is survived by: three sons and their wives – Robert (Bob) Huggins and his wife Ramona (Mona) Huggins, Edwin (Ed) Huggins and his wife Sandra (Sandy) Huggins, Mark Huggins and his wife Karen Huggins; seven grandchildren – Amy, Stacy, Melissa, Stephen, Ashley, Eddie, and Elizabeth; and sixteen (plus one on the way) great-grandchildren – Will, Vivian, Sammy, Maddie, Kade, Daniel, Olivia, Gabe, Anna, Nini, Macie, Jack, Jack, Chloe, Cooper, and Alex, and her half-sisters Dorothy Louise Beck (Alexander) and Nancy Alexander, all of whom adored and loved Patsy, and she loved and adored them.

Patsy passed into Jesus’ arms surrounded by her family, who are comforted in the knowledge that she is finally with her Lord, that she had the beauty of her son’s face to meet her, and got to wrap her arms around her husband, granddaughter and loved ones once again.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Olathe Hospice House or the First Baptist Church of Olathe.
