Matthew Curtis Martinek, 27, passed away on February 1, 2016 at home in Overland Park, Kansas.

He was born on October 12, 1988 to Brian and Debbie Martinek in Olathe, Kansas. Matthew went to grade school at Prince of Peace in Olathe, and graduated high school in 2007 from St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park, Kansas. He also attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

Matthew played soccer growing up on several clubs in Johnson County, and he played on a State Championship team at St. Thomas Aquinas his senior year. He loved sports and was a huge fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He also was an animal lover, and was so attached to his adopted dog “Sydney”. He was a loving soul and always had a smile on his face and he loved his parents dearly. Matthew was a caring and loving person and enjoyed life, and he has passed on way too soon and will be loved and missed forever by his family and friends.

He was currently working in the home health care business as a caretaker, and was assisting in taking care of his father Brian at the home in Overland Park. He is survived by his loving mother, Deborah Martinek, and significant other Alan Grote of Olathe, Kansas and his loving father Brian Martinek of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother Justin Martinek of Olathe, KS; two aunts, Patti (Bill) Starks of Kansas City, Missouri and Karen (Mike) Cunningham of Kansas City, Missouri; an uncle Forrest (Marsha) Martinek of Kansas City, Kansas; and a great aunt, Liz Ryan of North Kansas City, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, Margaret and Joseph Sercer of North Kansas City, Missouri, and Betty and Forrest Martinek of Kansas City, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 7, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe, Kansas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Olathe, Kansas. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, Kansas.
