Virginia F. Austin passed away on April 22, 2016. Virginia was born in Pleasanton, KS on August 29, 1924 to Robert and Faye Smith and was raised with her younger sister, Carol. She graduated from Central High School in 1942 and had worked for the Department of the Navy, Commerce Bank, and Katz Drug before her wishes to stay at home and start a family. Later in the 1980’s, after her children had grown, Virginia and several of her friends drove cars for Hertz (Her husband, Bill, told her she needed to raise her Social Security earnings to support her needlepoint hobby; her Social Security check never did break $100 a month but her stitching was her passion and her love).
Virginia met her future husband, Bill Austin, at Fairy Land Park in 1941. Virginia & Bill were married on June 17, 1945. They were hand in hand together for more than 70 plus years.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. They kept in touch by writing letters weekly. He was discharged in November 1945 and Virginia & Bill went about setting up a household & raising a family in Kansas City. After retiring, Bill & Virginia made many trips overseas seeing all the wonderful cities & sites. They also volunteered many Saturdays at the Visitors Center down at the Plaza. Virginia was a very gifted needlepoint stitcher, and a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and the Embroiderers Guild of America. She made pieces for many family & friends. Some of her work has been displayed in the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Bill. She is survived by her sister Carol Williams; daughter Jan (Dan) Herod; sons Bob (Debbie) Austin and Gary (Hilda) Austin; grandsons Michael (Margy) Herod and Dustin (Kelly) Austin; granddaughters Ashley Herod, Christina Austin, Katie Austin, Rae Lynn Austin, Heather (Alex) Luthi; great-grandsons Carter & Christian Herod, Ryan Atkinson, Ivan Luthi; great-granddaughter Quinn Austin; niece Suzanne Williams; and nephew Stephen Williams.
Burial will be on April 27, 2016 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, KS.
