Rick Porter

Sunrise May 7, 1954 ~ Sunset January 2, 2015

Rick Porter, 60, of Olathe, KS, suddenly passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015. He was born to the late Roosevelt Porter and the late Mattie C. Davis-Porter on May 7, 1954 in Chicago, Illinois.

He spent his adolescence years in Dermott, AR, with his grandparents, Hezekiah and Mazzie Lee Davis, working on the family farm where his interest and passion for agriculture developed and taken to a higher level. His grandparents were instrumental in helping him to cultivate a spiritual self. He was a member of the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Dermott where church attendance and participation was woven into the culture of the family structure. Rick had to attend Sunday school every Sunday and Pastoral Services every 1st and 3rd Sundays. It was at Mount Olive M.B. Church where he accepted Christ as Lord and Savior.

Rick attended Dermott High School, where he participated in many school activities to include the Future Farmer of America Club (FFA), and was a member of the football team. He enrolled at the University of Arkansas in 1971, and became a devoted member of Viking Bi Fi Society. He actively served on the Pan-Hellenic Council, and was involved with the Student Government Association as well. Rick graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1975.
Rick worked a variety of job prior to beginning his career with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Soil Conservation Service (SCS) or Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), from 1980 until his retirement in July, 2011. He served as Soil Conservationist, 1980 to 1984; District Conservationist, 1984 to 1992 and Lake Region Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Coordinator, 1992 until retiring.

Rick was committed to volunteer conservation efforts and earned numerous national, state and local awards for his volunteerism and dedication to conservation efforts including: National Organization of Professional Black NRCS Employees, National Pearlie Reed Award (for his Commitment to Excellence); Hillsdale Water Quality Project Volunteer Years of Service Award; National RC&D Award (for his work on the NRCS Feedback Supervisor Team in 1996); USDA Certificates of Merit in 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1993; FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer Award; 2 Friends of the Water Awards; and the USDA Coordinator Skill Assessment Award.

He was actively involved with the National Organization of Professional Black NRCS Employees, the UAPB of Greater Kansas City Alumni Chapter and served as a consultant for the UAPB Youth Motivation Task Force (YMTF). Rick had a love for the University of Arkansas as he recognized the need to give-back. He would attend annual homecomings and Gateway Classics consistently for over the last twenty years. He was an avid sports fan and was enjoying life to the fullest prior to his sudden death. He had a special kinship with his tailgate buddies and would often brag to his aunts and uncles about the mean brisket he cooked.

Rick is survived by 3 daughters: Chela M. McPherson (Steven) of Dallas, TX, Ashley A. Wilson of Topeka, KS, and Keshonn Sanchez (Step-daughter), Olathe, KS; 1 Step son: Clifton Lyday, Olathe, KS; 5 grandchildren: Deja, Quationna, Daymonn, Auraea, and Myeela; 1 brother and 1 sister: Mickey Porter (Linda) and Peggy Porter-Dixon both of Montgomery, AL; 2 nephews: Orlando and Nicholas (Montgomery, AL); One great niece, Sky Elizabeth Porter; three uncles: U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis, IL 7th District (Vera), Jesse Davis (Calumet City, IL); Willie Davis (Ruby, deceased) Chicago, IL; three aunts: Dr. Ceola Davis Barnes (Hazel Crest, IL), Barbara Davis Nelson (Lawrence), Woodbridge, VA and Floretta Davis (Chicago, IL), a God Uncle: Nate Benson, (Chicago, IL); a special friend: Jean Thornton (Kansas City, MO), other close friends, many loving extended family members, former coworkers and associates.
