James M. Frankin III
1991 - 2015

James Melvin Franklin III, 23, passed away on January 19, 2015.

Born September, 23, 1991, in Coffeyville, Kansas, James spent his formative years in Olathe, Kansas where he attended Olathe North High School. It was at Olathe North where James helped to lead the football team to an undefeated season and the Kansas Class 6A State Championship in 2009.

Breaking Olathe North single-season rushing record, James scored 31 touchdowns and rushed for 2,803 yards, which earned him the prestigious Simone Award as the Kansas City area’s top player and one of James’ proudest moments.

With 5,916 career rushing yards and 69 career touchdowns under his belt, James signed with the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and as a freshman he finished ninth in the MIAA with 766 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in 11 games. James transferred to Northwest Missouri State, where he led the Bearcats with 1,247 yards and 25 touchdowns as a sophomore. As a junior, he led Northwest with 733 yards and 12 touchdowns. In spite of all of his accomplishments on the football field, James’ would say “Football is what I do, not who I am”.

James’ remarkable talents and gifts were not limited to the football field, as reinvented himself and began to build a reputation as a singer-song writer and rap artist, drawing a host of loyal fans. He was a friend to all who knew him and was always willing to help those in need, man or animal.

He will be forever missed by his parents, Kris and Ange Hoffman of Olathe, Ks and James Franklin, Jr. and Terina Franklin of San Antonio, TX; a brother Paul Austin, Coffeyville, Ks.; a sister, Lakeen Sumner and brother-in-law Glenn of Gardner, Ks; two sisters, Sherina Eddington and Breanna Franklin of San Antonio, TX; nephews, nieces, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and his beloved dog, “Ace”.

Candlelight vigil in James’ honor will be held Saturday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m. at Center of Grace, 520 South Harrison, Olathe, Ks.

Visitation will be held February 6, at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 Blackbob, Olathe, Ks., from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held February 7 at 10 a.m. at Lenexa Baptist Church, 15320 West 87th Street Parkway, Lenexa, Ks.
