Clyde Reinhardt Schuessler
Clyde was born in Ashburn, Georgia on December 6, 1911. After college, with a passion for music, she taught public school music, was a soloist at many events, sang on the radio, and performed the female lead in “The Barber of Seville” with the Alabama Conservatory of Music.
Life changed when she married Bernard H. Schuessler, who, as an Annapolis Naval Academy graduate, served in the Navy during World War II. Along with other Navy wives, she moved up and down the west coast, to be at the port where the ship would be most likely to come in. During those years, they had two children.
After the war, they moved to Boston, eastern Connecticut and then to Scarsdale, New York where Clyde lived for 50 years. She continued her music through singing in church choirs and as the choir director at the church in Connecticut. She loved life in Scarsdale and being close to New York City where she could go to places like Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera, and to Broadway. After Bernard passed away, Clyde went to work as a dental office receptionist where she enjoyed meeting and talking with the patients. She also loved travelling and made a number of trips with friends.
At 93, she decided it was time to sell her large house and move to a retirement community. On a trip to Kansas City with her daughter, she visited Lakeview Village in Lenexa and decided to “start a new life” at Southridge which lasted ten years. She was very happy in that new life because of all the wonderful people she met.
Her husband predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Dr. George Schuessler and his wife Dr. Deborah Schuessler of Nyack, New York; and Dr. Sue Schuessler of Overland Park. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angela Schuessler of Nyack; Wendy Strohm of Overland Park; and Roderick Gibson and his wife Cameron Rapp Gibson of Prairie Village. She is also survived by great grandchildren: Stephen Strohm, Alison Gibson, Luke Rapp, Ragan Rapp and Gage Barber.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 2nd at 2:00 p.m., in the 5th floor Treetop room in the Southridge building in Lakeview Village, Lenexa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Crossroads Hospice of Lenexa, 11150 Thompson Avenue, Lenexa, KS 66219.
